In addition to the above and digital inclusion, research interests include cloud/ virtualization, eLearning, and student engagement. John graduated from East Carolina University with an M.S. in Technology Systems with dual concentrations in Information Security and Computer Networking Management and recently completed over 30 hours of PhD level coursework in eLearning. His master’s thesis is titled:  “Small Business Information Security”. Mr. Vail also has over 20 years of experience as a project and operations manager.

Dedication to Excellence

Four years as a paratrooper taught me my can do attitude and the importance of rapid, precise communication. My nine years working for Craig White (owner of Innovations, the techline studio, and other businesses) taught me not only about furniture and lighting; but more importantly, how to run a successful business as a member of the senior management team. My information technology experience stems from working as a Student Technician while attending Florida State College at Jacksonville, and, while I was employed as an Operations and Project Manager in Nashville, Tennessee and Atlanta, Georgia. Part of my duties and responsibilities were securing, managing, troubleshooting, and maintaining the information systems. I have the ability to identify and analyze problems, distinguish between relevant and irrelevant information to make logical decisions, and provide solutions to individual and organizational problems. This ability was fortified as I practiced as a Forward Observer with the 82d Airborne and the letters of commendation I received attest to that fact. I also utilized those abilities as the Operations and Project Manager while employed in Nashville, Tennessee and Atlanta, Georgia. I have the ability to consider and respond appropriately to the needs, feelings, and capabilities of different people in different situations; am tactful, compassionate and sensitive, and treat others with respect – which was exemplified as I managed a Customer Service department in Atlanta, Georgia, as I was a Student Technician at Florida State College at Jacksonville, and as a Professor at Florida State College at Jacksonville. I also have the ability to make clear and convincing oral presentations to individuals or groups; can listen effectively and clarify information as needed; facilitate an open exchange of ideas and foster an atmosphere of open communication. This is partially based upon the grades I have received in school for my presentations, the feedback I have received while attending Dale Carnegie, my participation in East Carolina’s Emerging Leaders program – both as a participant and as a mentor, as a Graduate Student member of the Distance Education Innovations Group Cadre, as a Presenter at the conferences listed, and as a Professor of Computer Networking at Florida State College at Jacksonville.
